Place 3 - Mary Ellen Summerlin

Mary Ellen Summerlin was appointed to the Place 3 Council seat on October 20, 2016 to fill the remainder of an unexpired term. She serves as liaison to the Recovery Community Coalition. From 2000 to 2006 she served on the City Council’s Home Opportunity Advisory Board which developed the Maud Jennings subdivision off Legion Drive.
Ms. Summerlin has a Master of Public Administration Degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Abilene Christian College. She has been a kindergarten teacher in Connecticut, a full-time mom, a social worker in Tennessee, and manager of the Riverside Nature Center in Kerrville. She officially retired as a tutor for Schreiner University students with learning disabilities in 2010. She currently tutors 6th graders at the First Presbyterian Church’s YES Center, and with her husband, Tim, she is also a consultant for the Council of Independent Colleges. She is a board member for Solar Under the Sun, a ministry of the Synod of the Sun, PCUSA, and has been active at First Presbyterian Church in many roles, including singing alto in the choir. In Kerrville she has served on the boards of Habitat for Humanity, the Riverside Nature Center, and was elected to the board of Headwaters Groundwater Conservation District for two terms.
Mary Ellen and her husband Tim moved to Kerrville in 1999. They have a son, Sam, in Austin, a daughter, Sarah, in Maryland, and a daughter, Beth, in North Carolina. They delight in two granddaughters and three grandsons ranging from preschool to graduate school (UT, civil engineering).
