The School Resource Officer (SRO) of the Kerrville Police Department is a highly visible member of the staff in the Kerrville Independent School District.
The SRO program serves the community in a proactive capacity of law enforcement in the educational environment. The SRO provides an individual service to the parents, students and staff at the High School, first as an enforcement presence on campus and secondly, serving as a mentor promoting self-respect and discipline among the students. The Program increases positive attitudes toward law enforcement and encourages cooperation between students and police. SRO’s are frequently called upon to help resolve problems that are not necessarily criminal matters. Many times students just want someone to talk to about problems that they are experiencing, and the SRO can act as another caring adult in the school building who works to find positive solutions for young people. The SRO also assists the Community Service Officer with the Junior Citizen Police Academy (JCPA) to provide the youth of Kerrville an opportunity to learn about the role and functions of the Kerrville Police Department. It is hoped that all graduates of the JCPA will get to know more about the men and women who are protecting their community and why they make the decisions they do while performing that duty. The program is also designed to provide valuable information to those young adults who are interested in a career in law enforcement. While fostering better communication between youth and police through education, the Junior Citizen Police Academy seeks to improve the quality of life through a strong commitment to community policing.
