Teen Court
The Kerrville Municipal Judge presides over the Kerrville Teen Court, which meets every third Tuesday of the month from September through May to hear the cases of defendants between the ages of 10 and 17 (18 if the defendant is still enrolled in a secondary school) charged with class C misdemeanors. The defendants appearing before the Kerrville Teen Court have to agree to participate in the program and are defended, prosecuted, and sentenced by teenagers. If the defendant successfully completes the Kerrville Teen Court program, then that defendant’s charges are dismissed, and with the exception of traffic offenses that are reported on the defendant’s driving record, these charges are not included on the defendant’s criminal record. |
|
In lieu of a fine and costs, a defendant must agree to perform the number of community service hours as determined by the jury. Community Service hours must be performed with a governmental entity, non-profit organization, an educational institution, or another organization approved by the Court. Community service hours that a defendant performs at a facility that has not been approved by the Court may not be accepted as fulfillment of the defendant’s community service hours.
Another condition for successful completion of the teen court program is a defendant’s completion of the number of jury duty sessions as mandated by the jury. One teen court proceedings will count as one jury duty session even if multiple cases were heard during that particular teen court proceeding.
Another condition for successful completion of the teen court program for more serious violations, violations identified as Class IV violations in the teen court sentencing guide, may require the completion of classes, letters, or reports. However, this is not a mandatory provision of sentencing, and the decision to require these classes and reports is completely left up to the teen jury after hearing the evidence related to those particular offenses.
